Description
A PERCHED BELTED KINGFISHER is a digital photograph by Carla Parris.
The belted kingfisher is a stocky, medium-sized bird which lives along the coast, or inland bodies of water, in the United States and other parts of North America. They are year round inhabitants in warm climates, but those in cooler regions migrate to warmer regions in the winter.
These cute little birds are territorial hunters who patrol their aquatic domain with an air of self-importance, fussing noisily at intruders. They like to perch on trees, branches, wires, posts, and water markers in, or on the banks of, bodies of water. From these lookout points, they watch for fish. When they spot them, they briefly hover above the water before plunging in headfirst, spearing their prey with their long straight bills.
Belted kingfishers are one of few species of birds in which the females are more brightly colored than the males. Both sexes sport a slate blue head, a white collar, a blue band across the breast, and white underparts. Females also have a reddish band on their upper belly.
Perhaps the most distinctive feature of belted kingfishers, besides their white necks, is their ragged, shaggy double crest. After they have been diving into the water, it is not unusual to see them with an endearing bad hair day look from wet feathers.
This adorable little fella was photographed at St. Marks National Wildlife Reserve on the Gulf coast of northwest Florida. The initial image has been tweaked with some textures and creative post processing which included the use of another original photograph from the refuge.
The palette of this piece is blue, gray, black, and white on the subject and greens, golds, browns, and very pale blues and grays on the background.
