Description
Photography of a Camellia bloom on the Alabama State Capital Building grounds. Original photograph was digitally enhanced into BW HDR artwork.
The camellia (Camellia japonica L) was designated the state flower of Alabama in 1959, replacing the original state flower adopted in 1927 (goldenrod). Camellia japonica is the most widely grown ornamental species of the genus. The name camellia was given to the genus by the Swedish botanist Linnaeus, who developed the bino-mial system of nomenclature used to classify plants. From the ornate conservatories of eighteenth century Europe, to the stately plantations of Americas nineteenth century south, the camellia has been a pampered and cherished plant, a living symbol of elegance and aristocracy.
