Description
Centaurus A. Chandra X-ray Observatory (CXO) image of the radio galaxy Centaurus A (NGC 5128). This galaxy, which includes a large dust lane, has a supermassive black hole powering its powerful jets (one pointing to upper left) and lobes formed by the jets (one at lower right). The X-rays are colour-coded by energy levels from lowest (red), to medium (green), to highest (blue). It is thought that the dust lane wrapped around the centre of the galaxy is a remnant of a collision with a smaller galaxy millions of years ago. This galaxy is located in the constellation of Centaurus and is around 11 million light years from Earth. This image was published in 2014.
