Description
Cryptosporidium sp. in a spinach leaf stoma, coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). These are Cryptosporidium sp. protozoan parasite oocysts (reproductive cysts, in gold). A plant's stomata are pores that regulate the exchange of gases between the inside and outside of the plant. If ingested, this parasite can cause gastrointestinal illness (cryptosporidiosis) resulting in diarrhoea or vomiting. It is typically ingested by eating unwashed food.
