Description
The mule deer is named for their large, mule-like ears; which can be over 6" long. Since fawns can not run fast from predators, which include bears, cougars, and coyotes, they typically hide. The mother will leave the fawn alone for short periods, but she will return, so if you see a fawn by itself, leave it alone. Mule deer females usually give birth to two fawns, although if it is their first time having a baby they often only have one fawn. Mule deer have no upper teeth, only a hard pallet. Mule deer have a 310 degree view around themselves because of the position of their eyes on the sides of their heads. Mule deer are generally born in May or June, and can weigh from 15 to 20 pounds (7 to 9 kg). By winter, the fawns have lost their spots. The females can weigh up to 45 pounds (20 kg) and the males up to 75 pounds (35 kg).
