Description
On the afternoon of Friday the 28th September 1917, the famous German ace Ernst Udet observed five Sopwith Camels of 43th Squadron patrolling somewhere between Vermelles and Wingles, France. They were flying lower than he was and he decided to attack against the odds. The Commander of the British flight, Captain Wynn, also spotted the aggressor. But even before he was able to warn the others, Udet zoomed in and shoot at the Camel of Lt Hood from 30 meters, bringing it down in flames. It was Udets 12th victory. After that Udet went on attacking Captain Wynns Camel, which after a short barrage of machine gun firing was bad damaged with fuel and oil tanks pierced and six cylinders out of action. But Captain Wynn was no rookie either and, as Udet flew in front of him, zooming out, managed to put some precise shooting on Udets Albatros that forced Udet simulate a spin out of control and crash land behind his lines. Captain Wynn also made it home in his bad damaged Camel but still, he was counted as Udets 13th victory, probably because the Germans thought that he crashed somewhere behind British lines. Looks like Udet had lot of luck that afternoon since the other three British pilots, probably rookies, decided to run for it after watching two of their comrades going down in less than five minutes, including their Commander.
