Description
Funk & Wagnalls was an American publisher known for its reference works, including A Standard Dictionary of the English Language; 1st edition of this dictionary was published in 1894. The company and the book are no longer in existence but they were made famous in a number of comedy routines.
The comedy phrase, "Look that up in your Funk and Wagnalls”, was originated by Dewey “Pigmeat” Markham, an African-American entertainer. This comedy reference was frequently used on Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In and as part of Johnny Carson’s Tonight Show’s Carnac the Magnificent skits.
