The peregrine falcon (Falco peregrinus; Japanese name: Hayabusa), also known as the peregrine, and historically as the duck hawk in North America, is a widespread bird of prey in the family Falconidae. Both Chinese and Japanese symbolism recognizes the Falcon as an emblem of nobility. Additionally this bird represents power, bravery, and vision. Practitioners of Feng Shui use this bird as an icon of pursuit and movement, heading toward success.
Falco peregrinus furuitii, described by Momiyama in 1927, is found on the Izu and Ogasawara Islands south of Honshū, Japan. It is non-migratory. It is very rare, and may only remain on a single island. It is a dark form, resembling pealei in colour, but darker, especially on tail.
