Description
Great Bardfield is a picturesque village in Essex. These three houses are on Brook Street, and form part of what is known as St John's Terrace. Timber framed using large beams with wattle & daub, they were originally one large house with a hall in the centre. Before the fireplaces and chimneys were added in Tudor times, the smoke from the fire on the hall floor would have risen and found its way out through a hole in the roof, evidenced by the blackened beams in the ceiling. The original house was built in 1460 and has had several additions and changes including the decorative woodwork on the exterior, which is Edwardian.
