Description
Guano extraction. Men loading cars with guano at the Great Heap - a huge 2,000,000 tonne heap of guano on the Chincha Islands, Peru. Guano is the excrement of birds or cave-dwelling bats. It is a highly effective manure and fertiliser. The Chincha Islands were of interest for their extensive guano deposits, but the supplies were mostly exhausted by 1874. Photographed in 1865.
