Mayan ruins in Chiapas, Mexico. Columns rise from the overgrown ruins in the background, with workers supervising donkeys pulling carts on rails in the foreground. The Maya were an ancient Mesoamerican civilization that inhabited southern Mexico and nearby areas for thousands of years from the second millennium BC to the Spanish conquest in the 16th century. Photographed in the period 1913 to 1917 by US anthropologist John Alden Mason (1885-1967).
