Michael Foster (1836-1907), British physiologist. Foster gained his medical degree in 1859 at University College, London. He later moved to Cambridge University where he became professor of physiology in 1883. He did much to establish physiology as a major scientific discipline. He pressed for the construction of new laboratories, wrote 'Textbook of Physiology' (1876), and founded the Physiological Society (1876) and the Journal of Physiology (1878). His research was mostly in the field of genesis of the heartbeat. He was elected Fellow of the Royal Society (1872) and made Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath (1899).
