Description
I took this photograph of Mono Lake on a late afternoon visit in October. Mono Lake is a large, shallow saline lake in Mono County, California. It was formed at least 760,000 years ago as a terminal lake in a basin, and has no outlet to the ocean. Due to the lack of an outlet, very high levels of salts accumulate in the lake. These salts make the lake water alkaline.
Mono Lake is a desert lake with a highly productive ecosystem based on the brine shrimp that thrive in its waters. It provides critical nesting habitat for approximately two million annual migratory birds that feed on the shrimp. The city of Los Angeles diverted water from flowing into the lake, lowering the lake level and consequentially endangering the migratory birds. The Mono Lake Committee formed in response, and they won a legal battle that forced Los Angeles to partially restore the lake level.
