Description
When I first came to Wyoming I was in awe of the blackness of night and the brightness of the stars. I never imagined that, during certain, special nights, a display that is usually reserved for the far north, would be visible here. The aurora borealis, or northern lights, have lit up with Wyoming darkness several times this year as the sun reaches the height of its 11 year sunspot cycle. The colors of the aurora were a source of awe and mystery throughout human history. But science tells us that the different colors are a result of different gases in the upper atmosphere becoming excited as solar particles collide with them. Oxygen gives off the green color of the aurora while nitrogen causes reds and blues. I photographed this aurora display in June of 2015 in the Beartooth Mountains. It was stunning.
