Description
I thought you might have seen enough birds recently so here is a moth!
As you see not all Moths are dull and boring looking, and here we have a rather delightful UK moth, the Puss Moth (Cerura vinula), medium large, with a wingspan of up to 70mm. This is a male, as evidenced by the feathery antennae used to detect the pheromones given off by the females.
This was taken in my garden in Sissinghurst, Kent, England and he is perched on my favourite red Camellia Bush in full flower.
I believe that the name "puss moth" refers to the cat-like hair on the head and body, but I always think that it looks more like a Dalmatian dog!
Someone also rightly pointed out that the furry head looks like the Ermine traditionally worn in the UK's House of Lords :0)
They also have the most remarkable looking caterpillar, but I am sorry to say, this remains firmly on my wish list, but one day I do hope to have a photograph to show you
