Description
A common bird of the deep woods. Often seen in aspen or other trees, feeding on leaf buds. In the more northern climates, grows bristles on feet during the winter to serve as snowshoes. When there is enough snow it will dive into a snowbank to roost at night. In the spring, male raises its crest, fans tail feathers, and stands on logs and drums with wings to attract females. Drumming sound comes from cupped wings moving the air, not pounding on its chest or a log.
