Although she is no longer living, I believe my mother would have favored this one painting above all my others; and so this is dedicated, with her favorite poem, to Frances Shumard, my mother:

John Masefield "Sea Fever"
I must go down to the seas again, to the lonely sea and the sky,
And all I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by,
And the wheel's kick and the wind's song and the white sail's shaking,
And a grey mist on the sea's face, and a grey dawn breaking.
I must go down to the seas again, for the call of the running tide
Is a wild call and a clear call that may not be denied;
And all I ask is a windy day with the white clouds flying,
And the flung spray and the blown spume, and the sea-gulls crying.
I must go down to the seas again, to the vagrant gypsy life,
To the gull's way and the whale's way, where the wind's like a whetted knife;
And all I ask is a merry yarn from a laughing fellow-rover,
And quiet sleep and a sweet dream when the long trick's over.

Thank you, Nicole! It is the "quiet place" in my mind that provides peace in difficult times.

Thank you, Marian! I have the same feeling. It may be a lonely stretch of beach, but it is above all peaceful ... perhaps following a storm that took away the seaweed and driftwood?

The sandpiper does not appear to be lonely. Instead it seems to be in love with the solitude. Very thought provoking, Peri. voted and tweeted CFC#16

I love the textures and wish I could lean over that rock into the spray!
Peri Craig replied:
Thank you, Jessica! That's my first rock, and I dreaded doing it for many years. Now that it's done, I wonder what my issue was! (Actually, more literally, I started laughing, and said "So what was your childhood trauma?!!" Fortunately I was alone at the time).

Oh my ... here I am, voting for myself in CFC ... feels really odd to so that. But I do like this piece, and have actually got it as my computer desktop!

Peri, This digital photo looks just like watercolor! It has such a lonely feel to it, and the poem adds another dimension to interpreting it. Love the texture everywhere. V/f
Peri Craig replied:
Thank you, Kathy! Actually my "digital photo" is a purely digital painting, created on my monitor while staring at the hummingbird feeder outside my window and missing the sea. But you know, that's an AMAZING compliment! Thank you so much!

love the mood, great brush work
Peri Craig replied:
Thank you, Bill! My very first rock. And thank you especially for the comment on the brushwork! The undersides of those waves gave me absolute fits!

Peri Craig replied:
Thank you, Karen! figured I'd carried it around inside my eyelids long enough, it was time to paint it and change the "internal scenery!"

Great work, Peri, glad to know you're OK
Peri Craig replied:
Thank you, Sergey! Yes, I am well. My computer is being difficult, so I'm having to use a friend's machine, making email difficult.
