Description
This is Cinder, a chimp that lived for 14 years in the St. Louis Zoo. Cinder suffered from a from a condition known as Alopecia universalis which causes complete loss of hair. This condition occurs in humans as well. A number of years ago, I worked with a model who had Alopecia universalis. He had no hair anywhere on his body. Cinder died from a common cold in 2009. It had nothing to do with the hairless condition.
Humans are sometimes referred to as naked apes. In 1967 Desmond Morris, zoologist for the London Zoo wrote a book entitled the Naked Ape. When Morris published the book there was a considerable amount of outrcry over its premise, i.e., that we are part of primate evolution. “I must confess I was surprised to find myself fighting a rearguard action for Charles Darwin. After a century of scientific progress and the discovery of more and more fossils of human ancestors, I has assumed that most people were ready to face the fact that we are part of primate evolution. I thought they were ready to take a close look at their animal qualities and to learn from them. …but soon it became clear that I had a greater struggle on my hands.” The Naked Ape, Desmond Morris 1967
