Kalijoh strikes a pose for the camera originally photographed summer 2016 at the Kansas City Zoo which currently houses two male and four female Bornean Orangutans in two separate groups.
One group consists of the male Berani (13 years old) and the female TK (26 years old). Following a breeding recommendation from the AZA Orangutan SSP in 2008, they produced a female offspring, Kalijon. However, Kalijon was keeper reared for a period of five months.
The second group consists of male Rufus (23 years old), adult female Jill (36 years old), Jill's sub-adult daughter Josie (9 years old), and the infant female Kalijon (2 years old) for whom Jill has proven to be a a very successful surrogate mother.
Kalijon was raised in the orangutan holding building by 15 staff members and 10 docents. She had a human mom 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for a period of five months. At five months she was able to climb on the mesh and drink a bottle through it. At this time she was introduced to Jill who immediately picked her up and has been caring for her since. For the first seven months Jill would carry Kalijon to the mesh so that she could receive her bottle from the keepers. At about one year of age Kalijon was weaned from her bottle. She is still carried by Jill, especially in unfamiliar situations.
Josie has proven to be a great big sister playing with her young adopted sister, and even carrying Kalijon at times.
