Description
Torture chambers. 19th-century artwork of a dungeon, torture chambers and instrument thought to have existed at Nuremberg, Germany. Known as iron maidens, the purported existence of these devices and their possible history were described in a paper ('The Kiss of the Virgin') by British music composer and antiquarian Robert Lucas Pearsall (1795-1856). Pearsall described his researches undertaken in Germany in 1834 and 1835. This artwork was published with Pearsall's paper in Volume 27 (1838) of 'Archaeologia', the journal of the Society of Antiquaries of London.
