Just what I wanted for a new iPhone. A special “Thank You” to artist ‘Serge Averbukh’ for the addition, at my request, to the design of my Navy rating, the lightening bolts (sparks as they are/were called) in the middle of the CPO insignia. I asked; he came through….When I use my phone, it brings back fond memories of my 20-year Navy career…. Thanks Serge….
Often known as The Redoutable at Trafalgar, 21st October 1805 (oil on canvas) by Mayer, Auguste Etienne Francois (1805-90). The actual title of the image is unknown, painted in 1836 by Auguste Mayer, it is suggested that the information about the painting was lost during WWII and it was given incorrect background and title when recovered. The picture is one of six that Mayer painted in 1836 about the struggle and fights of ship of the line Bucentaure during the Battle of Trafalgar (cf. Musée Nationale de la Marine website).
The ship in the foreground on right (firing to the Bucentaure) is the British 2nd-rate Sandwich, not present at Trafalgar, actually being hulked for harbour duty at the time. It is therefore generally held that the Sandwich is actually the British 2nd-rate Temeraire, incorrectly titled by the artist, and the dismasted ship in foreground left is the French 74-gun 3rd-rate Redoutable.

Beautifully made.

It is not the Redoubtable, the dismasted ship is Villenueves' flagship the Bucentaure (note half man, half horse on the bow) whereas the Redoubtable was a full figure of a man

Very well done!

CURIOUS AS TO WHY THE OWNER OF THIS PAGE IS PROFITEERING FROM AN OLD MASTER, UNLESS YOU R A DIRECT DESCENDANT OF THE PAINTER, AS THIS IMAGE HAS APPEARED BEFORE UNDER A DIFFERENT NAME. AND I FAIL TI C ANY CONTACT DETAILS. THIS IS WHAT FINE ART IS NOT ABOUT
