Description
De-evolved human newt. Linley Sambourne's illustration for the new 1885 Macmillan edition of Charles Kingsley's 1862/3 'The Water-babies, a fairy Tale for a Land Baby'. Kingleys Waterbabies was a positive literary response to Darwin's 'Origin of Species. "The Waterbabies" was a moralising tale that included human 'do-as-you-likes' de-evolving back to apes and newts because of their careless ways. Despite being a Vicar, Kingsley found no problem believing Darwin's thesis of natural selection. Many religious men of the time took special creation as allegorical, and thought God worked by natural laws which He had set in place."
