Blue Mosque detail in the early morning light (Istanbul, Turkey). The Blue Mosque (Sultanahmet Camii), while still an active place of prayer, is one of the most popular attractions in Istanbul, Turkey. It is known as the Blue Mosque for the blue tiles over much of the interior. The Blue Mosque was built between 1609 and 1616, during the rule of Ahmed I. The architect incorporated the ideas of his mentor, Sinan, in the design of the mosque, aiming for overwhelming size and splendor. It has 6 minarets which were initially a matter of contention since 4 minarets were the common maximum. The Blue Mosque incorporates some Byzantine elements of the neighboring Hagia Sophia with traditional Islamic architecture. The facade of the forecourt is similar to the facade of the Suleymaniye Mosque (Mosque of Suleyman the Magnificent). The court is almost as large as the mosque interior and is surrounded by a vaulted arcade. It has ablution facilities on the outside of the courtyard.

In every place, light, mood, color, and...
