Description
An Emu at the local Southwick Zoo in Mendon, Massachusetts MA. This bird was photographed in infrared for a slightly different color scheme. A piece of straw hangs out of the bird's mouth as it looks intently through the fence at the zoo visitors.
Emus are the second largest bird in the world to the Ostrich. Emus are flightless birds that can be as tall as 6.5 feet. They are native to Australia and while running can reach speeds of about 30 mph. They are nomadic and will travel long distances for food. Emus eat small rocks, pebbles, glass, and other materials to help grind food down in their digestive systems.
