Description
Geneticists Bateson and Emerson, holding smoking pipes. British geneticist William Bateson (left, 1861-1926) proposed that evolution occurred by a series of 'jumps' (discontinuity) rather than the continuous change of natural selection. He coined the word 'genetics'. From 1910, he was director of the John Innes Horticultural Institution, Merton Park, Surrey, UK. US geneticist Rollins Adams Emerson (right, 1873-1947) was one of several who independently rediscovered the laws of inheritance uncovered by Gregor Mendel in the 1850s and 1860s. Emerson went on to work on maize genetics at Harvard and Cornell. Photographed in 1922.
