Description
This is the white Hibiscus immaculatus, Kokio keo keo, a native to the moist to wet forests of the mountains of Moloka'i. Immaculatus, latin for "without spots" or "pure", is extremely rare and grows in a few valleys here. The single white flowers are pinwheel shaped, up to 4 inches across, and borne at the ends of the branches. The staminal column is white and the flowers are slightly fragrant. I found an old plant in the mountains near my home and made a few cuttings, only one survived but is doing well, and is showing these elegant rare flowers in my yard.
