The genus has about 70 species in the wild which are native to India, China, Southeast Asia and Australia; Indonesia and the Philippines have the largest number of species. They are also a very popular houseplant as they are easy to grow and many hydrid species have been produced for the horticulture industry (some hydrids also occur naturally)
