"Running the Gauntlet"
Shortly after moving to British Columbia, we got to witness the Kokanee Salmon migration. A perilous last journey for these little landlocked salmon. Every year, thousands of crimson red Kokanee migrate from the lakes into streams and rivers. Their natural predator, the Bull Trout, are never far behind the hordes of salmon. The Bulls gorge on spawning Kokanee during this time.
We witnessed Bull trout cruising at creek mouths in just a few inches of water, trying to pluck a Kokanee from its redd at dusk.
This natural event sparked me to do a piece that captures the cat and mouse battle between these two, threatened species.
