Thera-Santorini
The archaeological finds in Santorini provides a rare glimpse into urban life and the famous wall paintings depicts the early Aegean world as as a highly developed society. Its elaborate architecture and vivid frescoes demonstrate the high level of civilization on early Bronze age Santorini. A sizeable settlement was found in Thera and gradually developed into one of the main urban centers and ports of the Aegean. It has been estimated that the 40 buildings uncovered so far account for only 1/30th of the huge site. The impressive buildings of Akrotiri include three-story houses faced with masonry (some with balconies) and extensively decorated with frescoes, which were very well preserved in the ash. Excavations at Akrotiri brought to light amazing findings such as the frescoes the buildings and the metal processing metals witness a wealth and greatly developed city. Most of the wall paintings are displayed in the National Archaeological Museum, Athens.
