While growing up in The Woodlands, Texas, Brian Kirchner often wandered the tree-lined trails. He would gaze at the lush canopy above him and absorb: the scent of the pine, the texture of the trees, the feeling of spiritual oneness with the physical creation surrounding him. Kirchner's Trees, a series of pen-and-ink sketches, reflects that experience. The works are not only literal interpretations, but figurative ones as well. Kirchner's art is layered with images to be found by the person who views it, similar to the way one interprets a Rorschach test.

Kirchner's art reflects his deeply held belief that the physical universe - everything experienced through the senses - is a manifestation of the non-physical universe, the spiritual behind the physical. His work explores the visible world in search of what lies beyond.

Brian's formal art training began at the Art Institute of Houston when an unintended work he made at age  thirteen was submitted and won him a scholarship.  Brian painted ceramic tile as a mother's day gift but his mom became enchanted by the brown paper bag he'd used as a pallet to mix his paints for the project. The bag exhibited a free spirited and pleasurable use of paint. It was that object - an artifact of the painting process - that in an ironic twist,  won Brian the prize years later.
