About Jason JaFleu Fleurant

JaFleu Biography:

Have you ever come across something, a piece of art so intriguing and different; yet so compelling and honest? Something that just left you fascinated, giving you complete insight of that artist yet at the same time having you questioning the who, how and why? The best way to word it is it’s like someone has “expressed the inexpressible”. A quote that has forever been embedded in Haitian – American painter Jason ‘JaFleu” Fleurant.

The self-taught West Palm Beach, Florida artist (son of two Haitian immigrants) has seen a steady rise since coming on to the scene in 2010. Jason often says he has two birthdays, his actually birth (Sept 10) and the day the artist JaFleu was born; January 12, 2010. After witnessing the devastation in his families homeland of Haiti due to the earthquakes that struck; something was triggered in him. “Inspired and hurt by the images flooding the TV screen, feeling powerless to help I did something I hadn't done since freshman year of high school. I started drawing, constantly”

Starting off with sketching the daily images he saw on pieces of paper while at work; what he later deem an “obsession” began to form. Things quickly escalated, the “itch” to create had taken over. With the floodgates now open, Fleurant found himself buying art pencils and cheap watercolor paints daily at a local Walgreens. After being encouraged by his close friend, author and poet Yanatha Desourve to try his hand at putting the work on canvas; Jason never looked back. “Art began to take a life of it's own, and began to be my therapy. Every brush stroke revealing and relieving any and every emotion I had locked up for years. I became my art and my art became me.” Jason would go on to say.

Now completely accepting the call to be an artist, he would go on to adopt the name “JaFleu”. A name he was held during a brief stint of attempting to be a rapper. The name, created by a then girlfriend was a combination of his first (JAson) and last (FLEUrant). JaFleu would later create an acronym for it inspired by KRS-ONE… JaFleu now stood for Justice Always Finds Light EventUally. He said it served as a reminder of what his art was about.

“What I hope my artwork always reflects is the idea that rules do not matter in art; that you don't have to be confining to the idea that you can only paint this way or do this thing. I've never been formally trained; everything I've learned has been by trial and error. I hope my art work always reminds people out of tragedy and darkness beauty can shine, kind of like the rose that grew from the concrete. I hope it shines as a beacon to others my age and younger. I hope it shines for those from the forgotten, abandon street corners, blocks where I'm from that there is more to life and that art isn't a joke as we were unfortunately trained by society to believe, but a way to reach pass where you currently are.”

JaFleu took his belief in the power of art seriously. Going about using it in various ways to bring awareness, raise money, help causes and giving other artist opportunities. He even would go on to start a personal project called #PayItForwardArt where he would place various pieces of his artworks around town for strangers to stumble upon. Writing various uplifting messages, and only signing his name. “We live in a world that’s so technology driven or we are so quick to get somewhere that we never stop to smell the roses. I thought to myself, what an awesome way to reward those who do happen to take that extra look at life. I may never meet or hear from whomever finds the pieces but I believe that it ends up where they belong.”

Inspired by words of his mentor Paul Fisher (renowned gallery owner and art dealer of the likes of international glass sculptor Dale Chihuly) that “Art is your job, everything else may pay the bills but this is what you are.”, JaFleu took the ultimate leap of faith early 2013. Leaving his job, JaFleu pursue art full fledged. A prolific artist, he created such a large mass of works, and through determination to get out there ended up in many exhibits, magazine articles, even exhibiting at 19th Annual LA Art Show, Art Takes Times Square, internationally and The Haitian Heritage Museum during Art Basel. JaFleu is currently being represented by Gallery 38, an Los Angeles, Califorina based art gallery. After catching the eye of gallery owner/ art journalist Badir McCleary. An honor he to this day is in disbelief about “I had literally tweeted early that year that I wanted one day to have my works exhibited at the Haitian Heritage Museum. Being a young Haitian American artist, it felt like that’s what I have to stride for. I’ve got to be apart of that history, so for God to see it fitting to make it so still leaves me in awe”.

“Art to me, means a way to escape. It means being able to as I once heard from a woman name Anita 'express the inexpressible'. It means that I have a way to become Neo in my own matrix and bend reality. Art also to me means a weapon that I could use to speak up and out about issues with no restrictions and really have an impact. I've always heard that 'Words have the power of life and death' and that 'pictures or worth a thousand words', so imagine the power of creating a painting.”

More than an artist, due to difficulty getting into art shows he began curating his own. Starting with ArtOfficiallyDope, a brand where he alongside fellow artist and friend Daniel Fortune would go on to form urban art showcases that started out of night clubs. Later JaFleu would come to find the life of gallery owners and curators intriguing. Studying the moves of his mentor Paul Fisher, and gallery owners such as Richard Beavers (House of Art) and Kenneth Plasket (Kenneth Plasket Gallery) he began to push further. Eventually curating exhibits in galleries and even putting ones together that hosted the works of Purvis Young. Currently, JaFleu has been seeing success with his “Exhibit Treal” art exhibitions. When asked why he (though pursing his own young career) pushes to provide other artist opportunities he states “The goal is to give people a chance to show their gifts. You go through hardships to make it easier for the next. I just don't want artist to suffer through the bull just to share what God created them to do.”

Even with all the accolades, accomplishments, having his works reach the collections of celebrities and more, JaFleu remains modest. His overall goals… simple. “I'm an artist. I believe in the power of art, and the right of every man, woman and child to create. I believe God gives us all talents and puts us on the path to make something out of it, and we have the option to decide rather to follow or not. I've found my path, and I hope to create art that will be thought provoking, inspiring, beautiful as well as therapeutic to my own soul. Yet when it is all said and done. My main hope is to leave a 'Beach Chair', a legacy for my unborn children, nieces and nephews. I want to leave them something they can be proud of, and hopefully it will make life easier for them. I am Jason Fleurant, but I also am JaFleu...a artist who is just dreaming out loud.”
