About Lee Ransaw

Lee Ransaw teaches art and art education at Morris Brown College and Spelman College in Atlanta, Georgia. Ransaw's artistic background included courses at Pratt Institute in New York and John Herron Art Institute in Indianapolis, Indiana. Lee has received both undergraduate and graduate degrees in Art from Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana and Illinois State University in Normal, Illinois. Among his many honors and awards are The Distinguished UNCF Scholars Award in Washingon, DC., The Rockfeller Foundation Fellowship to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, The Ford Foundation Fellowship, and a Bronze Jubilee Award for artistic achievement given by PBS in Atlanta. Recent acquisitions and Collectors of his work include The National Center for the Study of Civil Rights in Montgomery, Alabama, The Paul Jones Collection, The University of Delaware, The National Civil Rights Museum in Memphis, Tennessee and The APEX Museum in Atlanta, Georgia. 'My works on canvas are generally figurative with oils being the preferred media. I like the richness and luminious effect that one gets from building layers of paint, however, when I am working on several compositions at one time, or a series of ideas, acrylic paints allows me to quickly translate these thoughts and quickly make the necessary adjustments. Most of my ideas for subject matter for larger works come from my travels, my study of art history, and my interest and ties to 'a southern heritage.' '
