Tip: Gallery Logo Hack

Unless I've missed something, there's no way to customize images for gallery logos, or to conveniently upload one for that sole purpose. Here's a way around that; it's a pain, but it seems to work.

  • Create a square image for a specific gallery.

  • Upload it as you normally would (and delete all the prices so no one can buy it in the time it takes to do this, if you're concerned about that).

  • Edit the gallery.

  • Choose the new image as the logo.

  • Save gallery.

  • Now delete the image.

Even after you've deleted the image, the gallery logo persists.

Yes I know it can be deleted after you choose it for a logo. Thanks. Good idea about customization. Unfortunately, the image will remain in search for quite some time. Something I very much dislike about the search here.

One can always choose an image that fits as a logo.

If you do it fast enough it doesn't even get into the search

Hmm. Okay, maximum speed necessary, good to know (thanks for that info, Abbie).

Jessica, I often find that images composed with subjects off center just don't look right.

you could do it that way, but i found people actually do buy the buttons. so much so that when i started this they were much smaller. i redid them large and now sell them.

Sorry, Mike, I don't understand—buttons?

Or....you can upload the new image to a private gallery and hide it there for a day, then transfer it to the gallery you want, post the logo and delete. :)

I think we've cracked it, guys.

Be nice if it wasn't necessary, huh? Seems like a fairly obvious function :)

Thanks Joseph, this is very clever, I'm definitely going to give it a try. I like that you label this as a "Hack".

Cheers, YP, glad it was useful. It's a hack insofar as it's manipulating the system to do something it's not really set up to do. I think the appellation is apt here, as opposed to the term's general overuse these days :)

Thanks for the hack, Joseph. I was unaware you could delete the images afterwards!

Having said that though, I spent a few hours creating new logos and am happy with the square results so I'm going with Mike's idea that someone may actually buy them too as artwork!

It's still a great hack - good job.

Thanks, Richard. Yeah, nothing wrong with having more pieces. If people like them, more power to you.

in total i think i sold 4-5 buttons, most often as a phone cover. some people just like having a title or something. once they started getting the ones that i had (they were button size at first), i started making them really large. seems silly to sell the button, but i'm totally ok with it.

I also try to create logos that are also saleable as prints, usually square collages. I've done a few of my galleries but I have a lot more to go.

To be honest - when I was choosing and resizing images into a square format with a frame for my current gallery image set up it made me reassess the work. It was an excellent exercise from that perspective.

I agree with Mike on this.

If you are going to go to the trouble of creating a special "button" or gallery logo or gallery avatar, why not create an image you can also sell?

I personally don't feel the need to use a special gallery logo. I just use the most popular image that I have in each gallery. After all the idea is to attract people to enter the gallery to buy something, not show them things they can not buy.

Great ideas here!

Regarding the logo that you have re-figured to a square and don't offer: If you put the original image as the first one in your gallery, whoever clicks on that logo to enter your gallery will see it right away in the size you DO offer and not have to go hunting for it.

I love the framed logos that Richard has done and Toby's collaged logos. Sure, the logos themselves probably wouldn't be sold that way, but not everything has to be for sale, imho.

I agree, Floyd. I created logos with a picture frame and mat as it was my interpretation of how an image could look framed (given the constraints of a square logo). It also added a bit of white space between the images and, in my opinion, made it more pleasing to the eye, especially on my AW page.

Some interesting ideas here and I do see why some would want to create an image especially for a gallery and additionally have an overall uniform look (as Mike does).

I'm kind of like Floyd except I change the gallery logos pretty frequently. I have found that doing so increases visitor and bot activity which I figure is a good thing.

Plus - and I don't mean to be a contrarian, but . . . - I'm always a little annoyed when I see what looks like a great image as a gallery logo and go to the gallery to take a closer look only to find it isn't in there at all.

Floyd, I'm confused by your confusion. If an image has an off-center composition, a square crop exactly in the middle can look horrible. Any image I've customized for a gallery logo has basically been a square crop exactly where I want it (again, instead of the system automatically making it exactly in the middle).

Joseph, I made no mention what so ever of what you are suggesting I am confused about.

I think you have me confuse with someone else that talked about squares and crops. I did not.

One other thing you need to watch is - If you are already using a picture as a logo and if you improve the image later with post editing or if you go back to a location and get a better picture of the same thing (I do that allot) you need to make sure you change the logo picture too if you replace the image in the gallery. The best thing is to first change the logo picture to something else. That way you know it's gone when you delete it. If you leave it on as a logo it won't change over when you replace the picture with the improved one

Hi, I'm new here and am having difficulty uploading an image for my second and third gallery logos. My first went in fine (and in fact, I tried to change it with no luck....but will follow directions above again) But when I go to edit and add the next one, it simply does not allow for it. Anyone?? Ahhh never mind, I figured it out! :)

Joseph Westrupp

Whoa, Jennifer, you took me on an emotional rollercoaster there. But it had a happy ending. :)
