Bits of Sunshine

Let me just talk about some of the work I’ve recently finished. It is all part of a broader series or a journey, if you will, about exploring my deepest desires and my own “yes” around the type of art that I am making.

We’ve had a very dark, cold, and wet winter here in the Northwest. So my desires have been about warmth and sunshine.

I’m a Southern girl. I grew up in Alabama and Florida where the sunshine was abundant, particularly in Florida in the summer at the beach. I do have fond memories of warmth and play before the challenges of the world set in on me.

For that time walking on the beach, picking up shells, letting the sand squish between my toes, for the warm summer sunshine and the vast deep blue sea.

Yes I have an ache deep in my heart to experience this right now.

Alas, I grew up responsible and of course thought I’d lost that part of myself a very long time ago. The feeling you get when you have no cares in the world and you can just play, get brown, and eat bologna sandwiches and orange Push-up bars.

Then of course Mother cautioning us to let the meal settle before going back to play endless hours in the sun and surf. That wait time was sooo long!

That must have been a time when the sun’s power was filtered a tad better by our ozone and sunscreen was not yet invented. We had not a care in the world. If we burned, it was a vinegar bath to cool the heat and we’d heal up and look like little brown beans.

Ahhh, the deep blue of the sea, the sunshine; it felt so good.

We were always wrapped up in a towel at the end of the day and would drift off to sleep in the back seat of the car, with no seat belt on mind you. I often awoke in the morning not having remembered being carried to my bed.

That was such a long time ago and a feeling I want to reclaim. Perhaps when I’m too old to take care of myself I’ll be lucky enough to live in this fantasy world.

But I digress. Back to the rain, the dark, and the oppressing damp feeling of living in an area that is beautiful, to be sure, but certainly a tad wetter than I’d like in the winter.

So, it is with that feeling and thought in mind that I painted these “Bits of sunshine.”
