Spotlighting Russell

While story and scene ideas are the inspiration for some of my pieces, others are inspired by images that come to mind while reading a book.
The black and white photograph Russell's Shrine is an image which for me depicts the 1969 hippie commune life the protagonist Evie escaped to in Emma Cline's The Girls. While for young 14 year old Evie, Russell's ranch became a free-spirited sanctuary, it was also a place where coming of age kids flocked in a circle around Russell in near idol worship, to follow in his anti-capitalist and anti-authority beliefs, creating a rigid authority, with Russell as their leader. Coming across this large tree trunk with a gaping, walk-in hole, made me think of a would-be shrine dedicated to Russell on the fictional ranch, perhaps if made in to a film, something, a shrine-like structure such as this could be a part of the "ranch set".
