The blank eyes may represent the addiction to these drugs which has taken away their free will. Drug addiction is the compulsive desire to keep taking drugs. This may be to produce the desired effects of the drug or to prevent the ill-effects of withdrawal. Psychological dependence produces cravings, while physical dependence produces withdrawal syndrome if the drug is withdrawn. Tranquilizer drugs are one of the most common causes of addiction.
