Description
Dogfish head. Light micrograph of a transverse section through the head of a lesser spotted dogfish (Scyliorhinus canicula), in the region of the auditory canals. At upper centre is the dogfish brain with y-shaped ventricles (white space). Either side are the auditory cavities (white spaces) that house the semi-circular canals responsible for maintaining balance. The mouth (buccal) cavity is at lower centre. The bubble-like areas under the skin (left and right) are the ampullae, opening to the surface, which control balance and pressure differences. Magnification: x14 when printed at 10 centimetres across.
