Electronic stethoscope. Stethoscopes are used to listen to sounds within the body, and can be used to diagnose some disorders of the heart and lungs. They operate by transmitting sound to a diaphragm, creating acoustic pressure waves, which travel up hollow tubes to the earpieces. An electronic stethoscope works like an acoustic stethoscope, although converts the sounds to electrical signals, which can then be amplified.
