European bison (Bison bonasus) in snow in the Atapuerca region of Spain. These bison were reintroduced here in 2014 as part of the Living Paleolithic rewilding project intended to restore the previous state of the ecosystems in the region. Atapuerca is famous for the extensive fossil discoveries made here that have led to numerous advancements in the understanding of human evolution.
