Description
Geothermal power. Steam rising from vents at a geothermal power station. This station generates electricity by harnessing the energy in water that is heated naturally within the Earth's crust. In areas of volcanic activity this phenomenon of heating occurs at or near the surface. Pipes collect steam and concentrate it, building up high pressures to turn turbines and generate electricity. Geothermal power is an environmentally-friendly and renewable source of energy. Photographed at Wairakei Geothermal Power Station in New Zealand.
