Description
Stone age burial remains. Fossilised remains of a stone age (palaeolithic) human showing evidence of a ceremonial burial. This fossil, from Liguria, Italy, is that of a child. At this time, the inhabitants of the region were anatomically-modern Cro-Magnon humans (Homo sapiens sapiens). The Cro- Magnons lived in parts of Europe from around 50,000 years ago, and are famed for their cave painting and their creation and use of tools. They are considered to be the direct ancestors of modern humans.
