'Figures in a Souk' is a series of experimental oil paintings. I start out only to paint . The figures emerge from the canvas as the process develops. I usually like to paint over existing works of mine as that provides a unique starting point and existing textures and gestures. The Souk is an imagined interior with filtered light. You bring your own imagination to the work. What you see is determined by what you know, how you feel, what you believe.
About the paintings.. Like a bird on a wire... I have tried in my way to be free. My work is imagined rather than observed. It is expressive and colourful. I create new images that speak with the past but are not recreations. It is painting rather than "Art" that interests me. it's all about the painting process, applying colour, using texture, making marks. the intereting surface. The painting develops over time. They may seem finished at one point but then later are reworked. The work you see may have been several other paintings during it's lifetime. My enduring influences are many but include mostly Turner, Rembrandt and Rothko.
