Description
Antique Copper Plate from Pantologia: A New Cabinet Cyclopedia" 1819 by J.M Good, O. Gregory and N. Bosworth. Fine hand colour as issued. Shows the origional name "Penguin" of the northern great auk. the name was later used for the more recently discovered penguins of the antarctic. The Great Auk was last sighted in 1852 on the Grand Banks of Newfoundland and became extinct shortly therafter. The Birds were victims of over-hunting for food and bait. Their terminal decline may have even resulted from collecting for museums and taxidermist collections."
