Description
Coloured angiogram (blood vessel X-ray, frontal view) of the head of a 51 year-old patient one year after the surgical insertion of two stents (bright patches, centre) to treat two aneurysms. An aneurysm occurs when an artery wall weakens and swells like a balloon. If it bursts, an aneurysm can cause severe internal haemorrhage. This patient had two simultaneous aneurysms in the brain. One was in the right internal carotid artery (bright circle, left), and the other was in the left ophthalmic artery (bright patch, right). Stents (small sections of wire mesh tubing) were inserted to strengthen the weakened vessels and prevent the aneurysms from bursting.
