Description
Ankle joint anatomy. Artwork of a frontal (anterior) exploded view of some of the bones and cartilage of the human foot and ankle. The ankle joint has been pulled apart into five portions. At top are the lower leg bones, the tibia (thicker bone) and the fibula. Below the tibia is the talus bone (ankle bone), with which the tibia and fibula articulate. Below the fibula is the calcaneus (heel bone). At lower centre the rest of the foot includes the navicular, the three cuneiform bones, the metatarsals, and the phalanges (toe bones). The surfaces of the joints are covered in a form of hyaline cartilage called articular cartilage (white) that protects the bone surface from wear and tear.
