Artist's Description

ENIAC digital calculator. Technicians working with the ENIAC device, a digital calculator that was built at the University of Pennsylvania, USA, from 1943-46. ENIAC stands for Electronic Numeric Integrator And Calculator. The women are moving wires to change the connections between the 18,000 valves, thus changing the calculating 'program'. Although not a true computer, ENIAC is considered the second general purpose electronic calculator (after the British COLOSSUS). Designed by John Atanasoff and John Mauchly, ENIAC was originally intended for use in ballistics calculations. Photograph from the archives of the ARL (Army Research Laboratory) Technical Library. The women are Gloria Ruth Gordon (left) and Ester Gerston (right). This photograph is from the period before John von Neumann contributed to the project.
