Description
Pupa of a Monarch butterfly (Danaus plexippus). The pupa is nearly ready to hatch, shown by its translucent dark brown colour. The pattern of its wings is also just visible. The pupa is hanging from a leaf of the milkweed (Asclepias rotundifolia), the main food of its preceding larval stage. During its time in the pupa, the butterfly undergoes extensive re-ordering of its cells, changing from the larva into the adult.
