Description
"Ripples" was inspired by the 1970 Emerson, Lake and Palmer musical masterpiece "Take A Pebble".
"Just take a pebble and cast it to the sea
Then watch the ripples that unfold into me
My face spill so gently into your eyes
Disturbing the waters of our lives"
The piece opens with Keith Emerson playing the wire of his piano with a guitar pick, and as he begins to play the keyboard he is joined by Greg Lake on bass. After two stanzas of lyrics the song has Emerson playing a moving classical piano solo, followed by Lake with a softer acoustic guitar solo. Emerson comes back in for a second solo, this time reflecting a jazz theme where he is rejoined by Lake with Carl Palmer on percussion. It is a stunning performance by three men who took their classical music training into the heart of rock and roll.
Here, at the Seattle Arboretum on a May morning I was able to make this single abstract image of ripples unfolding across a pond that was reflecting the bright orange leaves of Japanese Maples against the fir trees in the background.
