Description
Grain (seed) of brown rice, GMO (Oryza sativa), coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). A grain of rice is the seed from the rice plant (Oryza sativa). There are two layers around the rice seed, the aleurone layer (brown), and a dry husk (pericarp, black). Husked rice is known as brown rice. Most of the vitamins and protein of the original seed are found in the outer layers. Milling and polishing removes the outer layers from the rice grain to eventually yield white rice. Removing the two outer rice layers changes the taste and degrades the nutritional value of the rice. Rice is the second most important crop in the world (wheat being first). This brown rice strain has been genetically modified (GMO). Magnification: x5.8 when shortest axis printed at 25 millimetres.
