Description
Northern gannet (Morus bassanus) colony. Colony of northern gannets nesting on Bass rock, in the Firth of Forth, Scotland, UK. This migratory seabird spends the winter at sea in the North Atlantic. It returns to land to breed, where it congregates in large colonies. It feeds on fish, plunge-diving into the water from great heights. Bass rock is home to the largest northern gannet colony in the world, with over 150,000 birds at the peak of the breeding season. Here, the gannets spend most of the year on 'the Bass', until the end of October when they set out on their long journey south, with many going as far as the west coast of Africa.
